In many situations, particularly during the phase of your important work, you prefer the machine not to disturb you in any way, including different tones or sounds.

In Windows 10, many users are getting confused how to adjust the sound volume on a per-app basis. Due to user interface changes, Microsoft added new, touch-friendly audio volume controls. You have two options for this. The first one is quite simple.

Instead of left clicking on the speaker tray icon, right click it. In the context menu you will see the item 'Volume Mixer'. Click it and you will get the good old mixer with all apps that are playing audio:

As of this writing, it is still possible to restore the good old 'classic' sound volume control. It was covered in the following article: 'How to enable the old Volume control in Windows 10'. As mentioned there, it should be done as follows:

  1. Open Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the following Registry key:

Tip: See how to jump to the desired Registry key with one click.
Create the MTCUVC subkey if you do not have it.

  3. Create a new 32-bit DWORD value named EnableMtcUvc and leave its value as 0.
  4. Sign out and log in back to your Windows account. Alternatively, you can just restart the Explorer shell. Actually, for many users this tweak works instantly, so try to click the speaker systray icon first.

The result will be as follows:

Now, when you click the speaker icon in the system tray, the old sound volume slider will appear, with the mixer button in the bottom area.

To avoid Registry editing, you can use Winaero Tweaker. The appropriate option will allow you to enable the mixer with one click:

There is another freeware app besides Winaero Tweaker, also created by me, called SimpleSndVol. I coded it for myself. Besides restoring the classic mixer appearance, it also offers left and right balance control in the volume slider popup:

I like the game “World of Goo”, but there are no built in volume controls. Is there any way I can control the application volume another way? I like to listen to music while I play so muting the whole computer isn’t helpful.

  1. Hello Jernara,

Unfortunately, you can't. The game does not have the option of turning off the music/soundfx.

So you should go with changing PC's volume controls until your preferable level of sound.

    I hope it helped.

    • That's actually what I'm asking how to do; in Windows you can open the volume mixer and adjust the volume of individual programs but I need something like that for OSX so I can circumvent the lack of in-game volume controls without changing the volume for the whole computer.

      • Hello Jernara,
Check this website on exactly how to change the output volume of your system..Go to the website and read the instructions

Once in 'SOUND' window. Below at the bottom there is a box of Output Volume Slide the bar front or back to increase and decrease the master volume to your preference.

        • Hi, thanks for the suggestions, but this still only lets me adjust the volume for the system as a whole, and not mute individual applications.

  2. Hello, have you checked the settings for your game? Most games have the option of turning sound off. Check in the settings under sound. It is usually found with the description sound on.

    • The game genuinely doesn't have any sound or video controls. It's been a complaint with the game for years but the developers just never bothered to do anything about it.

    • Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions (which look promising) but I'm searching for free solutions to this issue.

      • any luck to solve the volume individually?

        • Unfortunately, the only ways to do this are with paid applications like the ones you suggested. :-(
